About Me
Jigme is my name and Pema Gatshel is from where I come. I have to confess that I consider myself as an independent researcher although I parasite on state salary for my very survival. I love my country for paying me although I feel I am not doing so much to deserve what I am paid and that makes me active beyond my terms of reference (TOR). If anyone wants to know about me he/she should hire me for a research work related to nature. I do not know many things but I do many things that are necessary and are essentially interesting. I love forests, so I work for forest without knowing anything about what is happening to the forest that I love to manage. When I started my career as Forest Ranger, I marked trees for extraction without knowing their names and importance which made me so jaded that I later gave up the job that had to be picked by people who knew them even lesser than me. Doing so, I could escape the guilt of throwing away important species. As demanded by my TOR, I apprehended people who felled trees without marking (although it made no difference whether the trees marked for extraction were important or not since I did not know the species although I am supposed to know), fishermen that scoured the river banks without valid permit, poachers, and those who collected sand and boulder without permission. However, these jobs also raked my inner conscience as all those I tried to teach what the forest laws have to say were those who struggled to meet their ends. I pinned fishermen who did not have proper house to live, held poachers who did not have even a kilogram of rice at home (actually not home but a shack), fixed stone and sand collectors of contractors who did not come in open and paid fines from behind. All these reasons forced me to comprehend that what I was doing was not so important although I got paid for doing all such stuffs. Eventually, I tried to enhance my qualifications and I am thankful to the state for that because if I passed the examinations (Interviews, Entrances, Prelims, Main Examinations, etc.) they allowed me to move up and up my career ladder. However, I have a reservation here because I can see some people who even never attempted an exam (for reasons such as lack of qualification, because they felt lazy to compete, etc.) also enjoy same or even better facilities than the ones like me who burnt lots of candles to enter the officer group. I don’t get the reason why they have to be lucky like that and that’s where I fail to appreciate the system runners. Even as I write this so called "about me" I am feeling like a shit for such unjustifiable things. Trying to wash my dirty hands of cornering the poor and the marginal survivors (who depend on rivers for curry, forests for rice and sand and boulder for some extra vegetables) I moved to a soft part of the forest work (extension) which unfortunately is no more because of one man who did not, do not and will not know anything about forests and how it should be run. Policy corruption could have played a major role in the closure of extension offices based in the Dzongs and Gewogs. But being honest, extension was not my cup of tea and I never intended to work there but my fellow juniors who studied lesser and entered the service later, started showing their muscles as officers (although they were not, they were just stand-in officers) inviting me to that uncomfortable land to either over throw them or compete with them. See such things also can damage you. They really prompted me to be amongst them. But I must also confess that as I worked I started liking the extension job and I genuinely feel that I contributed the most as extension-ist than as some bully who ran after people who survived on forest from the time immemorial. As pointed out above, things changed for me when one man started thinking that I was doing no good job. He undermined my capacity and my qualifications (PU Science from Sherubtse College, Professional High Standard Certificate in forestry from Northeast Forest Rangers' College, Assam, India, B Sc Forestry from CNR, RUB, PG Diploma (Honours) in wildlife management from Wildlife Institute of India, M Sc (Biodiversity, Wildlife and Ecosystem Health) from University of Edinburgh, UK) although he knew I did a lot to conserve nature besides my normal works. I remember for working more than what is reflected in the TOR I even got out-of-turn promotion. But I am too sad that I lost a job that I was doing well at and I am now forced to pull on as everyone must - a situation not so comfortable. Just as your stomach would not leave you wherever you go I get a feeling that my capacity has been undermined beyond redemption. Therefore, I will stand tall as an independent researcher until such time that my honors are restored. One lesson I learnt after losing my job is that, life has to go on in whatever situation and that life is just like that. At many points in your life your capacity may not matter. One last but serious thing about me is that, “If you want to know better about amphibians and reptiles write to me at jigmewangyal@gmail.com”. Unlike others I do not take money to identify species, my service is free and you can enjoy. If you choose not to write to me visit https://www.facebook.com/groups/bhutanherps/. You may get some information. In there, we have international herpetologists going through the page and they can help you any time anywhere. Want to know more about me......HIRE ME. I AM AVAILABLE.
